After working on his second album in January 2003, the rapper Sabotage was murdered with 5 bullets in the south zone of São Paulo. He had just dropped off his wife at work. This crime happened 10 years ago and the murderer Sirlei Menezes da Silva, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Apparently it was vengeance, a dispute for drug trafficking in a slum in São Paulo but the family denies such thing as he had not been involved in crime for more than 10 years prior to his murder.
Most people do not know that six months before being murdered, in July 2002, the rapper told movie maker Ivan Vale Ferreira that: “If I die tomorrow, I have done most of everything that I was sent to do”. This sentence and other statements from people close to him are in a documentary named Sabotage: The Master of Canão which is due to be released in the second semester this year.
A CD will also be launched with some songs that were recorded before he died and the album will feature Sabotinha (Sabotage´s son) and Sepultura (Heavy Metal Band).
Tejo Damasceno, music producer said: Sabotage brought a new level to Brazilian rap, he was above average. You can find some people that might write as well as he did but not his musicality.
The film and the CD do not have a release date, however in April a tribute show will be made to celebrate his birthday featuring the best names in Brazilian Rap. The show is being organized by Ivan Vale Ferreira, who intends to launch a DVD at the same time as the movie.
“Fifty per cent of the film´s profit and products will be donated to Sabotage´s family. We want to help them somehow”, says the movie producer. Seventy per cent of the film is ready but they are looking for sponsors to launch it commercially.
The rapper was 29 when he was murdered and was at his prime time. He quit crime and starting rapping. He launched the CD “Rap is commitment” in 2001 and said a sentence that he will always be remembered by: “Respect is only for people who have it”.
